leinster cubs cook with senior players
on tuesday 01 november, children from leinster cubs rugby club queued up at wagamama dundrum to collect their aprons and chefs hats as they prepared for a morning packed with activities and fun as they became wagamama chefs
wagamama dundrum invited a group of 50 children to come along to get stuck into food prep with the head chef, hong li, and professional rugby players gordon d'arcy, jamie hagan and leo auva'a. not only did they try their hand at cooking alongside some of their idols, they also experienced the entire wagamama method of work by learning how to take orders on the cool electronic handheld pc’s. the fun doesn’t stop there as they made their own recipes for the infamous fresh juices and then, probably most importantly to the young rugby players, they tried some of the delicious noodles too!
the concept of the cooking class was developed to teach children early on, and in a fun and grown up environment, the importance of nutrition and fresh, healthy ingredients. they will also get to grips with health, safety and hygiene and they will each leave with a goodie bag packed full of lasting memories of their day
christine chung, operations manager for wagamama ireland says, “we have run this type of event before with the cubs and they just love it! lots of children are reluctant to try fruits, vegetables or anything which is different, so by explaining ingredients, cooking, creating and tasting dishes it just encourages them that healthy food isn’t boring! having the professional players there too just adds an extra dimension to the day, it makes it more exciting, and of course the young players really look up to the pros so hopefully they will follow in their footsteps. the kids really do take away a whole new set of knowledge, learnt in a modern way”
wagamama is an award winning asian-inspired noodle restaurant which first opened its doors back in 1992 in london’s bloomsbury. the wagamama ethos is to combine great, fresh and nutritious food in a sleek yet simple setting, with helpful, friendly service and good value for money
